The presence of man dates back to prehistoric times in Versilia. Many tracks were left in various places, from men of the Neolithic. After them, the Apuan Ligurians fortified hills and steps. The Etruscans, touched the region without leaving many traces. The Romans first built roads (the `old Aurelia) and then colonized the area and built villas, farmhouses and small villages that still represent the oldest part of the territory. After the Romans came the Lombards, who occupied the Roman settlements and gave the territory a structure very similar to the current one.
The turning point of the `man-made structure in Versilia can be traced back to the middle of 1200, when the two cities were founded, which for centuries represented the references of the two parts of the territory: Pietrasanta and Camaiore to the north for the south.
